Understanding and Enforcing Weight Disentanglement in Task Arithmetic

Task arithmetic provides an efficient, training-free way to edit pre-trained models, yet lacks a fundamental theoretical explanation for its success. The existing concept of ``weight disentanglement" describes the ideal outcome of non-interfering task composition but does not reveal its underlying cause. Crucially, what intrinsic properties of the pre-trained model (θ_0) or the task vectors (τ_t) enable this disentanglement remains underexplored. In this paper, we introduce Task-Feature Specialization (TFS), a model's ability to allocate distinct internal features to different tasks, as the fundamental principle. We first prove that TFS is a sufficient condition for weight disentanglement. More importantly, we find that TFS also gives rise to an observable geometric consequence: weight vector orthogonality. This positions TFS as the common cause for both the desired functional outcome (disentanglement) and a measurable geometric property (orthogonality). This relationship provides the key insight for our method: since the abstract TFS property is intractable to enforce directly, we can instead promote weight disentanglement by shaping its concrete geometric consequence, orthogonality. Therefore, we propose OrthoReg, a simple and effective regularization method that actively enforces an internal orthogonal structure on weight updates (ΔW) that constitute τ_t during fine-tuning. And we theoretically prove that OrthoReg promotes disentanglement. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OrthoReg consistently and significantly enhances the performance of various task arithmetic methods. RayPE: Ray-Space Positional Encoding for 3D-Aware Video Generation

Modern video diffusion transformers position their tokens through RoPE on the (u,v,t) axes -- a description of the camera's sampling grid that says nothing about the 3D structure of the scene. We observe that the geometric relation between two camera rays is captured by the Plucker reciprocal product, which is bilinear in the two rays -- the same algebraic form as the dot product in Transformer attention. Building on this analogy, we propose RayPE, a positional-encoding extension that injects per-token 6D Plucker coordinates additively into the queries and keys of self-attention, with a query/key flip arrangement under which the symmetric identity configuration coincides exactly with the reciprocal product. The injection is additive, the resulting attention score decomposes into a content term, a geometry term, and two content and geometry cross-terms -- all of which our experiments find individually necessary. To make the encoding stable across video data with heterogeneous camera-translation scales (SfM, deep SLAM, metric), we further decouple ray direction from moment magnitude, gate the encoding by a learned function of the log-magnitude, and apply RMSNorm to align it with the QKNorm-normalized content branch. The full module adds less than 0.1% parameters to a pretrained video DiT, is zero-initialized to start from the pretrained weights, and improves camera controllability, cross-frame 3D consistency, and overall video quality on a four-dataset training mixture.

Superposition as Lossy Compression: Measure with Sparse Autoencoders and Connect to Adversarial Vulnerability

Neural networks achieve remarkable performance through superposition: encoding multiple features as overlapping directions in activation space rather than dedicating individual neurons to each feature. This challenges interpretability, yet we lack principled methods to measure superposition. We present an information-theoretic framework measuring a neural representation's effective degrees of freedom. We apply Shannon entropy to sparse autoencoder activations to compute the number of effective features as the minimum neurons needed for interference-free encoding. Equivalently, this measures how many "virtual neurons" the network simulates through superposition. When networks encode more effective features than actual neurons, they must accept interference as the price of compression. Our metric strongly correlates with ground truth in toy models, detects minimal superposition in algorithmic tasks, and reveals systematic reduction under dropout. Layer-wise patterns mirror intrinsic dimensionality studies on Pythia-70M. The metric also captures developmental dynamics, detecting sharp feature consolidation during grokking. Surprisingly, adversarial training can increase effective features while improving robustness, contradicting the hypothesis that superposition causes vulnerability. Instead, the effect depends on task complexity and network capacity: simple tasks with ample capacity allow feature expansion (abundance regime), while complex tasks or limited capacity force reduction (scarcity regime). By defining superposition as lossy compression, this work enables principled measurement of how neural networks organize information under computational constraints, connecting superposition to adversarial robustness.

GeoRay: Gauge-Aware Feed-Forward Satellite 3D Reconstruction in the Geodetic Frame

Feed-forward 3D foundation models reconstruct perspective scenes in one pass. Satellite photogrammetry needs a different product, one that domain adaptation alone does not deliver: dense surface height in an absolute geodetic frame under non-central rational polynomial cameras (RPCs). Perspective-pretrained features are not reliably observable along RPC height rays, absolute elevation carries a low-order height--datum gauge exchangeable with sensor bias to first order, and monocular and multi-view cues fail in different regions. treats all three. Lightweight ray-consistent adapters make a frozen backbone matchable along native RPC rays. An explicit datum mechanism separates relief from absolute level and is equivariant to the vertical origin by construction, so one trained model serves zero-, one-, and sparse-control inference. Calibrated inverse-variance fusion combines the two relief streams. , our absolute-frame benchmark of eighteen systems across in-domain, cross-dataset, and cross-city tiers, scores absolute placement without registration or test-reference leakage. On 26 held-out US3D tiles, attains 2.99\,m absolute MAE at 91.9% coverage, improves completeness-aware accuracy by 46.4 points over the strongest compliant feed-forward baseline, remains the most accurate such system under both transfer shifts, and runs in 24\,s model-forward time per tile. Code and models will be released at https://github.com/HIT-SIRS/GeoRay
